Hope Lutheran Church sits on a hill in Toivola, Minnesota, its roots reaching back to January 1905, when a small group of Finnish settlers gathered at Andrew Beckman's home, hungry for the Word of the Lord and determined to worship together rather than just at their own kitchen tables. Fifteen people showed up to that first organizing meeting, and Toivola Evangelical Lutheran Church was born.
Building a church out of logs, on a $25 plot of land, with a pastor paid $10 a month (sometimes negotiated down to $5 when funds ran short) was no small feat for pioneer families. But they made it work — one coffee pot, one bazaar, and one hand-hewn log at a time, raising their first church in the western side of Toivola in 1908. As the community shifted eastward, the congregation purchased the current site in 1920, dismantled the log church piece by piece, labeled every log, and carted them over to be rebuilt on this hill. That same building still stands today, its log walls wrapped for decades in siding and paneling. In recent years, the paneling was removed from the back sanctuary wall, uncovering the original hand-hewn logs our founders raised in 1908 — a striking reminder, still visible today, of the hands and hope this church was built on.
Through the 1900s, the congregation weathered everything a small rural church weathers: money troubles, pastors shared with neighboring towns, Sunday Schools started and restarted, confirmation classes held two solemn weeks at a time in Hibbing, and no shortage of women quietly keeping the operation afloat through the Ladies Aid (later the Hope Ladies' Guild). When the congregation became fully self-supporting in 1979, it was the natural next step for a church that had always been self-reliant in spirit. Along the way, the name changed, too; since "Toivola" means "place of hope," Hope Lutheran Church felt like the only fitting choice.
More than a century later, that same hopeful spirit is still very much alive here. Whether your family has worshipped on this hill for generations or you're just discovering Toivola for the first time, we'd love for you to join us. Come see the little white church on the hill — the bell is still ringing, and the welcome is still warm.
