Synod Authorized Minister of Word and Sacrament (SAM)
Welcome to Hope Lutheran Church!
A little about me . . .I grew up in Cloquet where I graduated from high school. Then I enrolled at the University of Minnesota, Duluth, and graduated with a BA degree in Business Administration and Accounting. After 35 years of work as a bookkeeper, accountant, office manager, human resources manager, insurance examiner, controller, consultant, and finally as the Director of Finance and Administration for the Lighthouse for the Blind in Duluth, I was called to go to the seminary to formalize a lifetime of service to the Lutheran Church. Since 2002, I have served a number of congregations as a SAM, done pulpit supply for quite a few more congregations, including four Presbyterian congregations. I have also had the privilege of providing worship services for nursing home and assisted living residents. In February, 2020, just prior to the COVID-19 shutdowns, I began doing pulpit supply here at Hope Lutheran Church, Toivola. During the shutdown, I shared duties with another minister while I also worked about half time for Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Askov. In March, 2021, I committed to serving the congregation here at Hope where I had already found a wonderful new family. My passion for God’s Story, Our Story, began when I was beginning my sophomore year of high school and teaching a class of sixth grade boys. My mother had more than a little to do with that passion developing. She was an amazing Old Testament scholar and teacher. It was contagious.About fourteen years ago, I got concerned over the fact that many of the kids I had in confirmation and even some church council members could not articulate even the Christmas and Easter events. It pushed me to find a way to preach and teach at the same time and that led me to a newly created lectionary that had been developed by two of my Luther Seminary professors. The Narrative Lectionary has worked for me ever since. I even discovered that there is plenty of “good news” (gospel) to be found outside the four canonical gospels.Come and join us. We love to see new faces! Come and explore how you fit into God’s story and God’s mission.Blessings!Larry
